Al-ʿAdl
The Just
Root ع د ل (ʿ-d-l). Lane gives ʿadala as ‘he acted equitably, justly, or rightly’, while ʿadl is used for justice or as an equivalent or ransom, as shown in Qur'an 2:48. The verb ʿadalaka means ‘He proportioned you’, seen in Qur'an 82:7. The term yaʿdilūn, meaning ‘they act justly’, appears in Qur'an 7:159, yet also means ‘they set up equals’ in Qur'an 6:1. Al-ʿAdl is not used in the Qur'an as a name of Allah. The noun occurs, for example ‘Allah commands justice (al-ʿadl)’ (16:90).
