Dhū al-Jalāl wa al-Ikrām
Possessor of Majesty and Honour
Root ج ل ل (j-l-l). Jalāl, meaning majesty, is glossed by Lisān al-ʿArab as Allah's greatness, with jalāl said only of Allah. Ikrām, linked to the root k-r-m, means honouring and generosity. According to Lane, karuma means something highly esteemed, excellent, or precious. The adjective karīm is used for someone generous or noble. The name Dhū al-Jalāl wa al-Ikrām joins two roots, j-l-l and k-r-m, and appears in the Qur'an: ‘Owner of Majesty and Honor’ (55:27).
