Al-Mutaʿālī
The Most Exalted
Root ع ل و (ʿ-l-w). Lane gives the root ʿ-l-w as relating to height, with ʿalā meaning ‘it was, or became, high, elevated, or lofty’. In form VI, taʿālā is in the same sense, emphatically. The word taʿālā is used to mean ‘exalted is He’. Aʿlā is translated as ‘Most High’ in Qur'an 87:1. ʿAliyy also means ‘Most High’. While the Qur'anic text spells the name as al-mutaʿāl in 13:9, the hadith list uses al-mutaʿālī. ‘[He is] Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, the Grand, the Exalted.’ (13:9)
