Al-Mumīt
The Bringer of Death
Root م و ت (m-w-t). Lane states that māta means ‘he died’, with the form IV verb amāta indicating causing death. The word mawt means death, and mayyit translates as dead. In the Qur'an, amātahu, from the same root, means ‘He caused him to die’ as found in verse 80:21. Another related term, mamāt, also means death and is mentioned in Qur'an 6:162. Al-Mumīt itself does not appear as a noun or name in the Qur'an. The related verb is used of Allah in the verse, ‘My Lord is He who gives life and causes death (yumītu)’ (2:258).
