Al-Barr
The Source of Goodness, The Most Kind
Root ب ر ر (b-r-r). Lane provides barra as ‘he was pious’, directed towards both parents and God, with birr meaning goodness and righteousness. Birr appears in the Qur'an (2:177) as righteousness, while abrār refers to the righteous (3:193). Barran means dutiful, found in Qur'an 19:14, and tabarrūhum means to deal kindly with them, as seen in 60:8. The name Al-Barr is in Qur'an 52:28: ‘Indeed, it is He who is the Beneficent, the Merciful.’
