Al-Qābiḍ
The Withholder, The Constrictor
Root ق ب ض (q-b-ḍ). Lane gives qabaḍahu as ‘he took it with his hand... closed his hand upon it; grasped it’. Qabḍa means a grasp or handful, as mentioned in Qur'an 39:67. Maqbūḍa refers to something taken into possession, seen in Qur'an 2:283. The verb yaqbiḍu is used to mean ‘He withholds’, specifically of Allah in Qur'an 2:245. Though Al-Qābiḍ is not in the Qur'an as a noun or name, the related verb is used. ‘Allah withholds (yaqbiḍu) and grants abundance (yabsuṭu)’ (2:245).
