Al-Khāfiḍ
The Abaser, The One Who Lowers
Root خ ف ض (kh-f-ḍ). Lane describes khafaḍahu as meaning ‘he lowered it; depressed it’, the opposite of rafaʿahu, and in the context of God, ‘He abased him’. The term ikhfiḍ appears in the Qur'an to mean lower (your wing, that is, be gentle), 15:88 and 17:24. Al-Khāfiḍ is not found in the Qur'an as a name of Allah. Khāfiḍa occurs in 56:3, which describes the Hour as ‘bringing down, raising up’ (khāfiḍa rāfiʿa).
