Al-Ḥalīm
The Forbearing
Root ح ل م (ḥ-l-m). Al-Rāghib defines ḥilm as restraining the self and temper from the surge of anger. Lane lists ḥulm, meaning a dream, as the first sense of the root. Aḥlām can mean dreams in Qur'an 12:44 and minds in 52:32. The word ḥulum refers to maturity or puberty, as found in Qur'an 24:59. Of Allah it occurs only indefinite, ḥalīm (2:225, 22:59); the definite al-ḥalīm in 11:87 is said of Shuʿayb by his people. ‘And indeed, Allah is Knowing and Forbearing.’ (22:59)
The root
ح ل مḥ-l-m
Forbearance. Al-Rāghib defines ḥilm as restraining the self and temper from the surge of anger. The same root gives ḥulm, a dream, which Lane lists first.
