Al-Muqaddim
The Expediter, The One Who Brings Forward
Root ق د م (q-d-m). Lane notes the sense of ‘going before’ with qadama al-qawm, meaning ‘he went before the people; preceded them’. Al-Muqaddim (form II) is the One who puts forward. The root appears in qaddamat, ‘sent forth’, in Qur'an 78:40, and qadam, meaning ‘foot’ or ‘footing’, in Qur'an 10:2. Yastaqdimūn translates as ‘they bring forward’ in Qur'an 7:34. Al-Muqaddim is not in the Qur'an as a name of Allah. The pair Al-Muqaddim and Al-Muʾakhkhir is in the Prophet's supplication ‘anta l-muqaddimu wa anta l-muʾakhkhir’ (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1120, 6317).
