Al-Muʿizz
The Bestower of Honour
Root ع ز ز (ʿ-z-z). Lane describes ʿazza as meaning ‘he was, or became, mighty, potent, powerful’. Al-Muʿizz (form IV) is the One who grants might and honour. According to Lisān al-ʿArab, Al-Muʿizz gives ʿizz to whom He wills. The related term ʿizza refers to might and honour, found in Qur'an 63:8. Another related term, ʿazīz, means mighty. Al-Muʿizz is not in the Qur'an as a noun or name. The form tuʿizzu is used in Qur'an 3:26: ‘You honour whom You will and You abase whom You will’.
